Mechanics: Laws of Motion
Mechanics forms the foundation of Physics for JEE. A strong grip on Free Body Diagrams (FBDs) and Newton's Laws is essential for solving complex problems in almost every other chapter.
Core Concepts:
- Newton's First Law (Inertia): A body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by a net external force.
- Newton's Second Law: F_net = dp/dt. For constant mass, F_net = ma. This is the most frequently applied equation.
- Newton's Third Law: Action and reaction are equal and opposite, acting on different bodies.
- Friction: Static friction (self-adjusting up to a maximum limit fs_max = μs * N) and Kinetic friction (fk = μk * N).
- Circular Motion: Centripetal force (mv^2/r) is a requirement for circular motion, provided by real forces like tension, friction, or gravity.
Problem-Solving Strategy:
- Step 1: Identify the system.
- Step 2: Draw a neat and accurate Free Body Diagram (FBD).
- Step 3: Choose appropriate coordinate axes (usually along and perpendicular to the direction of acceleration).
- Step 4: Resolve forces along the axes.
- Step 5: Apply ΣF_x = ma_x and ΣF_y = ma_y.
Common Pitfalls:
- Forgetting pseudo forces when analyzing from a non-inertial frame.
- Assuming static friction is always at its maximum value (μs*N). It is a self-adjusting force.
